Last week Guild Wars had about 200 players participating in the alpha test. Nearly 150,000 individual accounts have been created for the E3 for Everyone event; the player-base for Guild Wars has increased by 750 times in a matter of days! With an early release for the event, players around the world have been playing Guild Wars for almost four days with a near constant increase of simultaneous connections compared with the days prior. The success of the E3 for Everyone event is not only found around the world, but also locally here in Los Angeles.
ArenaNet’s Competitive Online Role Playing Game (CORPG) is one of the many titles constantly being looked upon. NCsoft is sporting many Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOG) including City of Heroes, City of Villains, Lineage II, Tabula Rasa, and Auto Assault - but Guild Wars is arguably drawing the most interest.
Guild Wars promises to be a strong title, boasting the fact that the content during the demo is in limited supply. By release, you can expect to see approximately 30-40 environments, 10 Player vs. Player arenas, and 8 towns. During the demo, players have been invited to participate in 5 co-operative missions, 3 Player vs. Player missions, and 1 town. Truly, the E3 for Everyone event is only a sampling of what’s to come.
Each environment in Guild Wars is unique, and the outposts representing those instanced environments share the same visual representation to provide a familiarity with one’s surroundings. The sizes of each environment can vary greatly, but they average 2-3 square miles. Between the expected amount of co-operative and Player vs. Players areas there will be around 150 square miles of travelable terrain.
Traveling in Guild Wars is a quick venture; at any time, outside of a mission, you can move to an outpost, town, or simply transfer yourself to another player with the click of a button. ArenaNet would rather you play the game than prepare to play the game. If you have ten minutes before you dinner than you’ve got plenty of time to log in and complete a Player vs. Player battle in your local arena.
When entering an instanced area of Guild Wars, grouping in can be done manually or automatically. Automatic grouping will match your character to other characters based on their profession, skills, and level. Yelling "LFG" (Looking For Group) is a thing of the past if you so choose to utilize the automatic grouping functions.
Many players are often worried about joining groups of players that they are unfamiliar with, but with no permanent death penalty there is no risk. Death is dealt on a per mission basis, meaning that the penalty only affects you on that mission in that particular instance. Once you leave the instance of your mission your death penalty, consisting of a stat reduction, no longer affects your character.
The types of Player vs. Player available in Guild Wars is still being worked out, but one interesting type of play currently under consideration is a free-for-all style game with a nearly unlimited amount of players. One-on-one duels are not currently supported in Guild Wars, but, based on customer demand; it may be supported for launch. So if you want one-on-one support than make sure you voice your opinion in the Guild Wars Stratics Forums.
A common question here on the floor is "why did ArenaNet choose to not feature level progression during the E3 demo?" Quite simply, three days (five with the early release), is not a lot of time for players to learn how to progress. ArenaNet wants players to have the opportunity to play Guild Wars instead of being forced to learn a substantial amount about game play prior to being able to enjoy the title. Although geared towards the casual gamer, the demo is still offering a unique experience for hardcore gamers.
One feature which didn’t make it in to the E3 for Everyone event is character status symbols that will show the progression of a character. When in town, your character will wield a staff; the amount of decoration on the staff will reflect your character’s progression. When your character is first created you’ll be sporting a walking stick and the advancement of that walking stick varies based on profession, level, and skills.
Tomorrow marks the final day of E3, but one thing is certain: Day 2 From the Floor has been a great experience!
